It has the look of an ancient ruin and no discernible function, commonly known as a "folly" (never by locals though) and believed to be the vain attempt of a wealthy business man to build himself a very visible and lasting legacy to be remembered by - but John Stuart McCaig was not such a fool after all. His "tower", towering over Oban, is not only a draw for tourists ever since, it was also his means to provide work for unemployed stonemasons in his hometown during winter so they could feed their families.
Sounds like he provided an important means to the local community, I like people who do that.
