George Square

City Chambers

Sir Walter Scott high above the square

Straight off George Square: The entrance to the Merchant City

St. George's Tron Church of Scotland.
Fun fact: During Apartheid the Embassy of South Africa used to be
located here when it was called St. George's Place, so in 1986
Glasgow's Lord Provost renamed the street to force the ambassador to give his address as
No.1 Nelson Mandela Place. Glasgow activists had campaigned against Apartheid
since the 1960ies and Mandela was awarded the Freedom of the city in 1981
whilst incarcerated on Robben Island.
