The Misty Isle

An diesem Tag machte die Isle of Skye ihrem Namen alle Ehre.
An t-Eileann Sgitheanach (oder Eileann a' Cheo) ist ihr gälischer Name, vermutlich
bedeutet das "the winged Isle" wegen der Penisulas, die in alle Richtungen ausstrahlen,
mit den Cuillins als Zentrum in der "Mitte".

Ihr Wikinger-Name ist da einfacher: Skuy, Skýey oder Skuyö.
Skuy heißt "misty isle" und Skuyö "isle of cloud" - die Nebelinsel oder die Insel der Wolken.

Sie wird als "Skiö" in der Hakonar saga Hakonarsonar und einem Gedicht in der
Heimskringla von 1230 erwähnt. In Irish heißt sie Ellan Skiannach, "the winged isle".

Eileann a' Cheo = "island of the mist" ist die gälische Überstzung von Skuy
und Skyes poetischer Name.

Lied der Fischer auf dem St. Lorenzstrom in Kanada, deren Vorväter
 in den Highland Clearances dorthin vertrieben wurden. Um Schafen
Platz zu machen.
